Outbreak declared Nov. 23
Update Nov. 23, 2021: KFL&A Public Health has declared an outbreak at Truedell Public School following the identification of a second positive case in a student in the same cohort on Nov. 23. Cases were first identified in students on Nov. 21 and Nov. 19.
There are now a total of three cases at the school, only two are linked to the outbreak. Two class cohorts and one bus cohort are isolating and following directions from public health. The school remains open, however, visitors are limited at this time.
In the interests of maintaining privacy, the board will not identify people that have received positive COVID-19 tests.
All school families are asked to continue to monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 and screen all students daily as most cases of COVID-19 are acquired in the home setting. KFL&A Public Health is also asking families to use the extended symptom list for monitoring symptoms:
• Fever (37.8°C/100°F) and/or chills
• Cough or barking cough
• Shortness of breath
• Decrease or loss of taste or smell
• Nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea
• Fatigue
• Muscle aches and pain
• Sore throat
• Difficulty swallowing
• Runny or stuffy nose
• Abdominal pain
• Headache
• Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
• Decreased or lack of appetite
The school and board are working with KFL&A Public Health to identify cohorts of students, staff and others who may have been in close contact with the COVID-19 positive person at school. Not all students or staff will be affected by a positive case. A positive case at a school does not mean the individual was exposed to COVID-19 at the school. They may have been exposed somewhere else in the community or outside of the KFL&A region.
The school will clean and disinfect all areas where the individual may have been, and will work with KFL&A Public Health to develop a plan to protect all members of the school community to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
In accordance with Ministry of Education guidelines, the board has posted this information on its website. The board will continue to follow the directions of KFL&A Public Health who has the responsibility to manage confirmed cases of COVID-19.
KFL&A Public Health, the school and board are taking all necessary steps to prevent further spread of the virus both in the schools and the community. As always, the health and safety of students, staff and the school community remain our priority.
