February is Black History Month
What might you say if your child asks: "Why do people say Black Lives Matter? I thought everybody's life mattered."
You might respond by saying: "Imagine I take you and your friend to the playground, and they fall off the monkey bars and scrape their knee. They're crying and bleeding. I come over, give them a bandaid and a hug and try to help them feel better, right? That doesn't mean I don't care about you. It means that they need me right now. Well, Black people in America and Canada have been in pain for over 400 years because of racism and white supremacy. When we say Black Lives Matter, we acknowledge that pain. It doesn't mean that other lives don't matter; it means that Black people need us right now. And we need to stand in solidarity with them.".
